A pilot study of the extralimital West Indian Manatee population in Mobile Bay, AL

    Note:  This manatee was successfully identified by experts at the U.S. Geological Survey in Florida base on the unique characteristics of her tail as seen in the pictures below.  Her name is "Ellie" and she was originally sighted in Crystal River, FL in 1979.

The tail slices pictured here are likely the result of a collision with a boat propellor earlier in Ellie's life.   Using this tail notch along with the slices seen in the previous image, experts were able to identify "Ellie."
