A manatee takes a breath as it begins a dive while swimming past the Pensacola fishing pier.

When manatees dive their backs may be visible out of the water.

The scar visible on this animal's back will aid USGS researchers in determining its identity.

The notch visible in the middle of the tail will also aid in identification efforts.
